Preparing for Surgery

Thank you to Dr. Drayer for offering me the option of knee resurfacing. Being an active 40+ year old woman, I was limited to the activities I was able to participate in due to knee pain. After several arthroscopic surgeries, Dr. Drayer shared with me the option of a fairly new procedure called knee resurfacing. It sounded like the solution I had been looking for, because I wasn't ready for a knee replacement. On June 9, 2009, I had the procedure, and by August 17, 2009, I was back at Jazzercise, September 13, 2009 I ran my 1st post-surgery 5K, and December 27, I was back downhill skiing!! Thank you also to Capitol Physical Therapy for the accelerated PT.

Thanks to Dr. Drayer and this procedure for allowing me to get back to the active lifestyle that I had nearly given up on. This procedure may not be for everyone, but it was absolutely the solution for me and my lifestyle. One year later I have completed more than 7 5k races, attend jazzercise 3 times a week and am pain free!

Instructions for surgery

If surgery is necessary, knowing these instructions will make your experience more pleasant and safe.

Your surgical time is subject to change; this may happen as late as the day before your scheduled surgery. We will do our best to keep the original time and date, but this is not always possible due to any emergencies that may occur.

Please call Sparrow Hospital prior to your surgery so a brief medical history can be conducted by one of the nurses over the phone. The procedure for this varies, so please follow the instructions in the surgery pamphlet which has been given to you. Sparrow may give you a surgical time during this phone interview, but it may not be definite.

If you have any medical problems such as diabetes, asthma, heart problems, blood pressure problems, etc., you should call your family physician. An evaluation may be needed prior to your surgery.

Please call centralized scheduling at 517.364.3659 or toll free 1-800-772-7769, seven to 30 days before your surgery dare to schedule a pre-operative interview. Have your Social Security Number and insurance card(s) ready when you call.

Two weeks before surgery:

Stop all use of vitamins and herbal medications unless they are potassium or magnesium prescriptions.

One week before surgery:

You are to eat nothing after midnight prior to the day of your surgery unless otherwise instructed. No alcohol for 24 hours prior to surgery.

After Surgery:

Dr. Drayer will write a prescription for pain medication. Please call the office within 2 business days to schedule your post-op visit (which will be within 14-17 days of your surgery). You will also be given discharge instructions and exercises that you will start the day after your surgery. Please make sure you have these when you leave.
